iTunes: DJ sucks
I hate the new iTunes DJ, which came with the 8.1. It keeps putting songs I just listened its list. And I mean that like, three times the same song, one after the other. Even an options that says “make sure the list in iTunes DJ never contains the same song twice” would be enough to fix it. The previous Party list option was far better at it.
And don’t tell me the chances are very small, I have a music library of 16.26GB (that’s more than 3200 songs), plenty of music to choose from. If it was truly random, it should haven’t every 5 songs or so.
Tomcat 5.5: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space
I so hate anything Java. There’s absolutely no way a sysadmin can maintain Java apps without diving into Java as a developer. The whole VM is so different from anything else in a system that you keep getting stumped by problems that are not very clear at first glance.
Yes, of course it’s because of my lack of knowledge about Java, but newsflash: I don’t want to learn a language to be able to maintain the platform.
I ran into a Tomcat instance that was giving errors like “java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space”. My first inclination was to simply increase the -Xms and -Xmx options, since those were part of the config. Alas, it appears that “PermGen space” is not subject to these options. For that you need to add a -XX:MaxPermSize option. Aaargh!
Kudos to Wes Maldonado, Moazam Raja and the Apache/Tomcat FAQ for helpful hints. Also interesting is this link about how the memory usage of a JVM is built up.

MUpromo and the sheeps
So MUpromo has a deal on Mac apps. Kind of silly, if a certain number of sales are met, everyone gets an extra app. They did it before, apparently, with good results.
The apps are quite silly, except for the locked ones (I’ll get back to the “locked apps” a little later). For instance, the first app, Hazel, is a “house-cleaning” app. It can automatically clear out items in your trash after they’ve been in there for a certain while. Like anyone would want that! There’s a certain amount of joy I get when cleaning out my Trash, that makes me feel like I just cleaned the whole house (after, not before or during). A satisfaction. Hazel would take that away from me! Also, when you delete an app out of your Applications folder, Hazel automatically finds associated folders in several locations, including the Library/Application Support directory. Pfff, needed that a few months ago, now it’s already all cluttered!
Hazel can do more, though. It can keep watch of your desktop and changes the colors of new files in there or very old ones. Yay, didn’t you always just want that? Silly.
Now Hazel at least, is sort of useful, but Art Text? Double-u-tee-ef? That’s like as useful as a lumberjack on Easter Island. Complete timesink. Yeah, so it has 110+ pre-designed styles, who cares? It’s not like you can make anything useful with this. Just arty looking text. I played around with it, you know, just to see what it could do and before I knew it, it was an hour later! Talking about a timesink!
Next app, please! MenuCalendarClock is about as useful as Art Text. I mean, hello? I already have iCal? Why would I want this app that even uses iCal itself?!? What a rip off. Yeah, sure, it adds a convenient icon to your status bar that shows you the day of the month. And you can click it and it’ll show you the current month, tasks you have in your calendar, week numbers etc. You can add tasks from that small app, too! Pfff, why would you want a small, non-obtrusive little thingy in your status bar when you can have a full blown iCal? I really don’t get this app.
Leap aka “YabatwtmF”, Yabba for friends. If you watch the videos on this guys site, you’ll see what it’s all about: Absolutely nothing. Some finding improvements, maybe, but can it really replace Finder? So maybe it does look a little nicer, allows you to easier find files instead of traversing countless of folders and allows you to tags documents and other files for easy finding in the future. Do you real need this kind of functionality? I know I don’t.
So you want to be a writer, huh? Yeah, move to the back of that very long queue over there. There are more writers than readers on this planet, so I really have no idea why and app like StoryMill would be interesting to anyone. Who reads books anyway? I once tried to write a book, but I grew frustrated from my text processor and it’s ability to completely dull my senses. StoryMill is a bit different, I’ll admit. Allows you to save your research, create a comprehensive timeline, gives you tools to track your progress, and even allows you to go to “full screen mode”, so you want have any distractions while writing. Give me old pen and paper, I say, the good old-fashioned way to write. They’re called “writers”, not “typists”. Jeez.
Apparently, the people from MUpromo don’t think very highly of their users typing skills. Well, neither do I, so the next app could be quite useful for most of them! Typinator (“I;ll bve bakc”) fixes spelling mistakes on the fly. In any program you’re in, doesn’t matter if you actually want the error to be corrected! For example, while trying to type the misspelled quote, I actually had to trick Typinator for it to allow me to spell back … back.. aaargh, again! B A K C. There. It also makes writing your complaints over and over again much easier! Simply make a macro and Typinator will save you several key strokes. Rant away!
I love my DVDs. My Extended Edition of LotR (all three of them, of course) isn’t supposed to fit on one DVD! Or on a video iPod! Can you imagine watching all that beauty, all those wonderful shots, the details, on such a tiny screen as the video iPod? Even the iPhone won’t do it justice. So I have a special dislike for their next app, DVDRemaster Pro. Aweful, it screws up the artistic effort the creators put into it. How glad I was about the the previous app, so appalled am I about this app. Rubbish! I mean, it allows you to remaster the DVD! Who would want such a thing, I say! Bah.
Are you still with me? Let move on to the “locked” apps. And I’m sure they will stay locked, because there’s absolutely no reason for anyone to buy this bundle. Let’s dive in, shall we?
At the time of writing, we’re waiting for the first app, Sound Studio 3, to be “unlocked”, as they call it. Unlocking is apparently achieved by having a certain amount of buyers. If 5000 people buy the bundle, the app gets “unlocked”. After this app has been unlocked, we’ll hear the amount of people needed to unlock the second app. A boring yet very sly marketing ploy! As soon as you bought the bundle, it’s in your best interest to promote the bundle! Countless sheeps are polluting forums everywhere now, pointing to this worthless bundle. Spam galore! Cheap advertising, I call it! Sounds like one of those “Ponzi schemes“.
Now, about Sound Studio…. And that’s about it. Nothing more to say about it. Oh, I could tell you about the ease of the ui to edit recordings, all the effects you can add or editable features, but I won’t. Who records themselves anyway? Large studios are much better suited for that. Well, except of course for the person who actually found StoryMill worthwhile, they can go make a PodioBook out of it! Or you can make a podcast, but let’s be real, who actually listens to those anyway?
Another silly app: BannerZest. It makes, well, banners. Or slideshows. Cool idea but… it makes them in Flash! Boo! Flash! Boo! Talking about screwing up the surfing-experience. I still remember the time when the web was just plain and static. Good times, good times. Applications like these make the web look way too… flashy, for lack of a better and less hyped word. So now you can make you picture collection look like an art gallery. Woopie. If only your personal pictures were worth it…
Parallels for Mac is the biggest name in this bundle and probably the most useless app around. So you want to run a pc… on your mac… How silly is that? Why would you ever want to have a pc inside your mac? You’d only get infected with those gazillions of virusses that are around the world! Or worse, you could be tempted to finally ditch the Mac and migrate back to that world shattering Microsoft OS, Vista! Oh you need to run some of those MS only apps? Well, tough luck. Go find their Mac equivalents. But you won’t find them in this bundle.
And when you finally thought you were through all those apps, there’s an announcement that they added an app for the first 3500 buyers! Like they’ll ever meet that goal! Silly people there. Anyway, the app is WhatSize. It’s for the machos amongst us. Show the world how large your Pictures folder is! Look at how much extra weight is in your Trash!
So anyway, useless bundle. You can go away now.
No really. Go away.

Yeah yeah, I bought it three days ago already and you really need to check it out. Great value for a very very low price! Now go buy that bundle so I get to play with BannerZest to make my pictures nice and browsable and can update my Parallels 2!
DigiD
Om belastingaangifte te kunnen doen, hebben particulieren vanaf dit jaar een DigiD nodig. Voor mensen als jij en ik is dat niet zo’n probleem. Ik heb een beetje mijn twijfels over de veiligheid van het systeem, maar het is in ieder geval een stap in de goeie richting. Behalve voor mijn buurman.
Onze buurman is geboren in 1937 en heeft voor zover ik weet nog nooit achter een computer gezeten, laat staan achter internet. Maar hij wordt ook verplicht om een DigiD aan te vragen. Dat heb ik dus zojuist voor hem moeten doen.
Dat heeft me wel aan het denken gezet: Gaan we steeds meer naar een overheid waar je technische vaardigheden voor moet hebben om ermee te communiceren?
Romance in books written by females
Last week, I finished reading The Black Magician’s Trilogy by Trudi Canavan. Although I really liked the serie (a 9 on a scale of 10), I’m a bit troubled by a trend I see often with female writers. You’d expect that women would like it more when the romance within a story is honest and straight forward. Well, that’s how I like romance in a story. Very old-fashioned, probably, but I still believe in the whole one-love-for-life idea. Honesty towards oneself and specifically towards the other person in a relation I keep in high regard.
During the whole story, I can sympathise quite well with Sonea, the protagonist of the story. But near the end, when she chooses for another lover than the guy who she kind of started a relationship with. And not by telling him, but by simply making the decision. When her former lover finds her in the arms of her new lover, he’s obviously a bit upset about it. But how does she react?
“[Sonea] thought back to the days she had spent with [Dorrien] in the Guild. It seemed a long time ago. Had he hoped he would regain her interest one day? Though she had made no promises, she felt a pang of guilt. Her heart was Akkarin’s. She had never felt this strongly about Dorrien.”
I mean, WTF? That’s just mean. And they say it’s usually the guys who break a girl’s heart. Well, I’m not buying that anymore. When it comes to love and feelings, it’s usually the girl who reacts in the most unthoughtful manner. Who ever said you should spare a woman’s heart clearly was very, very confused.
The thing that gripes me the most about this, is that I’ve seen this so often before. The girl “follows her heart” and in the process, she really, really hurts someone else. I don’t know how it was in “the old days”, but lately, I’ve seen this more and more often. It bothers me. I’ve been treated myself that way often and the sting actually comes back in full force when I read something here. The way she so casually brushes over his feelings.
I’ve noted it more often in stories written by women than in stories written by men, I think. And by the way the hurted guy acts in the rest of the story, Trudi really expected him to be over it without too much trouble. Which for me busts a feeling of plausability within the story.
As I said, I liked the trilogy overall, but I’m not that appreciative about the turning around in the romance. Makes me feel bad. (But, considering how an author usually wants to touch you, good or bad, this could be what the writer intended.)
Huisje zoeken (4)
We hadden een heel leuk huisje gevonden. Echt, we zagen het allebei meteen zitten. Mooie keuken, van alle gemakken voorzien. Een woonkamer die groot genoeg is voor ons, met een vloer van siergrind, ideaal eigenlijk voor ons met Aag, aangezien dat makkelijk schoon te houden is. Een ruime tuin, genoeg plaats voor een kennel, overdekt terras, aangrenzende garage waar je droog kunt komen vanwege de overdekking. Elektrische garagedeur, siergrind in de garage (de vorige eigenaar had van de garage een klusruimte gemaakt). Een grote slaapkamer, een extra slaapkamer (waar we de kleerkast wilde zetten, zodat we een groter bed konden aanschaffen), badkamer met ligbad (niet ideaal om te douchen, maar overleefbaar). Et cetera, et cetera. Het was je waarschijnlijk wel opgevallen dat ik in verleden tijd aan het praten ben.
De verkoper vond dat we binnen twee weken moesten laten weten of we de financien rond kregen. Het nadeel van een eigen bedrijf is dat banken altijd een heel stuk moeilijker doen over een hypotheek. Het is niet een kwestie van je inkomen bewijzen, banken willen de cijfers hebben van de afgelopen drie jaar, een prognose, een gesprek met de accountant over hoe onze toekomst eruit ziet, een gemiddeld hoog inkomen over de afgelopen drie jaar, etc. etc. Daarnaast wordt mijn inkomen maar voor 75% gerekend. Dat is het nadeel van een eigen bedrijf. Gisteren verliep de deadline en de bank kon nog geen antwoord geven op onze vraag of wij een hypotheek kunnen krijgen. Het zag er goed uit, maar we hadden nog geen definitief antwoord. Dus moesten we beslissen of we ja of nee zouden zeggen. Onze accountant heeft van de twee weken nog drie kunnen maken (normaal heeft hij zes weken nodig!), maar meer wilde de verkoper absoluut niet over praten.
Het nadeel van ja zeggen als blijkt dat je het achteraf toch niet kunt doen, is dat je dan verplicht 10% van de aankoopsom moet betalen aan de verkoper. Dat is meer dan €15.000,-. Ik weet niet wat jij op je spaarrekening hebt, maar Monique en ik komen bepaald niet aan dat bedrag. Dus ook al zag het er erg goed uit, we hebben besloten dat we geen risico van €15.000,- wilden lopen. De verkoper wilde niet horen over extra tijd, dan zou hij naar de volgende geïnteresseerde gaan, want die waren er genoeg.
Afgelopen dinsdagavond hebben Monique en ik er dus lang over gepraat, de voor en nadelen tegen elkaar opgewogen en besloten dat we het risico niet willen lopen. De schuld ligt in onze ogen uiteraard bij de verkoper, die zo ongeduldig is. Het was een hele moeilijke beslissing, want we keken er echt naar uit om eindelijk samen te wonen en ons eigen huisje te hebben. We vonden het huisje echt ideaal.
“Vonden”, verleden tijd. Dinsdagavond hebben we samen nog even op internet gekeken naar andere huizen. Er zijn er nog genoeg, tegen interessante prijzen en misschien wel meer op ons gericht dan het huisje waar we zo onze zinnen op gezet hadden. Dinsdag gaan we alweer kijken naar een volgend huisje. Dit huisje viel ons dinsdagavond echt op als eigenlijk beter dan het huisje wat we aan het kopen waren.
Er zit nog een klein staartje aan. De verkoper zou contact opnemen met de volgende koper, maar er kwam al meteen achteraan dat als die het huisje niet meer wilde, hij terug bij ons zou komen en we twee weken extra zouden krijgen. We hebben uiteraard gezegd dat hij dat huisje ergens kan steken waar de zon niet schijnt. Als hij ons gewoon een week extra had gegeven, dan was alles geregeld. Maar daar was hij te ongeduldig voor. Ik hoop dat die andere partij het huisje niet meer wil en dat het nog twee maanden te koop staat.
Doodstraf
Ik ben een falikant tegenstander van de doodstraf. Pas wanneer we in staat zijn om fouten die daarbij gemaakt worden terug te draaien (dat wil zeggen, een onschuldig iemand weer levend kunnen maken) kunnen we echt over het leven van een ander beslissen.
Echter, als ik sommige dingen lees, twijfel ik toch wel eens aan de juistheid van mijn standpunt.

Het vrouwelijke orgasme
Ja, dat is wel een titel om je aandacht te krijgen, niet? 
Maar eigenlijk wil ik alleen een linkje posten naar het artikel over de gevolgen van een vrouwelijk orgasme in het brein op Noorderlicht. Op zich is het best interessant, maar wat ik ook erg opmerkelijk vind is eigenlijk de eerste alinea:
“Seks is een enorme drijfveer voor mensen en een orgasme hoort daarbij. Er wordt dan ook ontzettend veel over gepraat, maar niemand weet eigenlijk precies hoe klaarkomen werkt. En onderzoekers wagen zich er niet aan, want het is toch een beetje ‘not done’, een taboe. Het orgasme, daar moet je afblijven. Net zoals je volgens sommigen moet afblijven van religie.”
De meeste vreemde dingen worden onderzocht, maar het orgasme niet? Vreemd, eigenlijk, aangezien sex niet alleen een belangrijk onderdeel van het leven is, maar ook een belangrijk onderdeel in een relatie. Een beter inzicht in alle aspecten zou toch alleen maar in het voordeel van “de mensheid in het algemeen” kunnen werken? Ik bedoel, kijk maar naar de vreemde beslissingen van het huidige demissionaire kabinet, daar blijkt toch wel duidelijk uit dat de mensen daar genoeg hebben van de vele nachten overleg (en dus de geringe toegang tot hun partner).
Maar goed, het artikel is verder wel interessant.

As I stated before, I’m not a big fan of anything American and I really think they’re doing more wrong than right at the moment. But this report is disconcerning. Especially since we had all those troubles with electronic voting machines here too.
It just proves it, if you want it electronically, you want it Open Source. Not because I’d like to tinker with it and make it run on my 1337 machine, but because a democracy is all about having nothing to hide about how someone came to power.
I won’t be voting on a machine that doesn’t have any and all specs and software published and scrutanized by the voters themselves.
Something to admire
The recent killings in the Amish community school was met with a very humbling a inspiring reaction from the Amish community. Can’t say I honestly think I would react in the same way. But I do think the lesson is very true.

Afschaffing Habeas Corpus Act in Amerika
Gisteren hoorde ik het toevallig op de radio, tijdens een roddelgesprekje en vandaag ben ik even bezig geweest met ernaar te zoeken en in verband met een wat positiever berichtje naar een vriendin, heb ik er iets langer over nagedacht. In Amerika wordt/is vandaag de Habeas Corpus Act buiten werking gesteld door Bush. Het algemene nieuws lijkt dit niet zo interessant te vinden, want op bijvoorbeeld Google News zie je het pas terugkomen als je er gericht naar zoekt. Persoonlijk vind ik het een erg gevaarlijke ontwikkeling, één die in mijn ogen een regime à la Hitler of de USSR of weet ik veel welke deprimerend regime nog meer. Mensen die opgepakt mogen worden zonder officiële beschuldiging en zonder controle door een belangrijke macht van de Trias Politica (Ja, ik weet het, geen ideaal systeem en al helemaal niet erg goed toegepast in de meeste landen, maar je moet iets). Waar gaat het heen met de vrijheid?
Gerelateerd hieraan, wordt ik dan ook erg ongerust als ik lees dat een Amerikaanse, 14-jarige scholiere opgepakt wordt voor spotprenten over Bush. Waarom ik me druk maak? Iedereen heeft het er toch altijd over dat wij hier in Europa alleen maar achter de Amerikanen aanlopen…?
SuperMicro BMC2 and ipmitool
I’m going through hell to get IPMI2.0 working with ipmitool. Apparantly, out-of-the-box they’re incompatible. Great.
The BMC2 uses RMCP by default, but ipmitool wants RMCP+. No problem, SuperMicro provides flashable images that do support RMCP+. Great. Only, you will need to boot the machine into MS DOS and have the image (3.2M, too big for a floppy) on a writable medium (so just having it on a CD doesn’t work). Joy.
So… I downloaded an MS-DOS boot disk and dd‘ed it to a floppy disk, borrowed from the neighbours. Since the machine wasn’t installed yet, fortunatly, I could simply fdisk a partition, reboot, format the partition, reboot and boot into an Ubuntu LiveCD, download the flash stuff and copy it to the FAT partition I just created. Then I could boot the MS DOS disk again, c: and start the supplied Setup.bat to flash the IPMI hardware. Lovely.
Didn’t work. I have no idea what went wrong, I got no errors on the screen while flashing the hardware, but after the next reboot, IPMI was untracable. I couldn’t access it from the OS or with ipmitool or even with the supplied IPMIView20 Java thingy. Now, I sent some mail to the ipmitool-dev mailinglist, describing my problems and got some useful reactions. None of them helped me out, eventually, though.
So I ran the whole RMCP-to-RMCP+ stuff again. Nothing.
I ran the supplied CD again and reinstalled the IPMI stuff. Again, no response at all.
I ran the RMCP-to-RMCP+ again, and lo and behold! It works! I didn’t do anything different this time, very sure of it, because I was keeping track of every little thing I did (since I need to do this for several other machines). But it works.
Now to get OpenIPMI working, but I’ve found possible help with that. Don’t know if it’ll work, though. We’ll see.
IPMI is cool, though, once it works.
Security guru predicted consequences of 9-11
I’m probably not the first to post this on the Internet, but here goes anyway.

Iedere maand word ik wel een keer gebeld of ik wil betalen voor een vermelding in één of andere bedrijfsgids. En dat kan ik maar niet begrijpen. Als je toch een gids maakt, wil je toch zo compleet mogelijk zijn? Wat heeft het voor nut om een gids te maken waar niet alle bedrijven in staan? Maakt je onbetrouwbaar… Maar dat zal wel aan mij liggen.
ExactOnline
Onze accountant heeft mij gewezen op ExactOnline, een online boekhoudpakket van Exact, het bedrijf dat volgens mij in Nederland het grootste marktaandeel heeft (maar dat heb ik niet onderzocht). Uiteraard heb ik het pakket eens bekeken en ik liep tegen wat zaken aan, waar ik het bedrijf over heb gemaild.
Zoals ik al eerder ooit gezegd heb, heb ik weinig vertrouwen in een product waarbij de financiele gegevens op de server bij een derde komen te staan. Wanneer onze accountant zelf een server had (eventueel onderhouden door een extern bedrijf) zou ik er meer vertrouwen in hebben dan in een oplossing zoals deze. Maar ik ontkom er niet aan, ik zal er op een gegeven moment ook aan moeten geloven, wil ik samen met onze accountant onze boekhouding goed kunnen uitvoeren. Dus ben ik ExactOnline eens goed gaan bekijken.
Eigenlijk ziet het er helemaal niet zo slecht uit. De prijs is goed, functionaliteit is dat wat je ervan verwacht, niet meer, niet minder. Ze hypen een stukje functionaliteit die je office pakket zou koppelen aan de webinterface, maar dat vind ik eerlijk gezegd niet zo interessant. Het stuk waarbij je zou kunnen syncen met je Internet Bankieren vind ik dan interessanter.
Ze ondersteunen alleen maar Internet Explorer. En daar laten ze dan weer een flinke steek vallen. Internet Explorer is bewezen de meest onveilige browser, waarom zou je hem dan als enige ondersteunen in je boekhoudpakket? Waarom eis je van mensen dat ze een onveilig programma gebruiken om hun financiele gegevens over het Internet te sturen? Ik kan dat niet begrijpen. En dat terwijl er zulke betere alternatieven zijn.
Als ik niet-technische mensen over zulke zaken spreek, halen ze hun schouders op en gaan gewoon door met gebruiken wat ze gewend zijn. Totdat ze een keer goed tegen de muur lopen en hun financiele gegevens in de verkeerde handen terecht komen. Zolang bedrijven als Exact zo’n gedrag blijven promoten en ondersteunen (overigens is dat niet alleen Exact, er zijn genoeg banken die enkel Internet Explorer willen ondersteunen voor Internet Bankieren), blijft het Internet een gevaarlijke plek. En een bedrijf die dergelijk gedrag promoot, ga ik niet ondersteunen door hun product te gebruiken.
Toen ik ze hierover gemaild heb, kwam er overigens een antwoord terug met termen als “de mogelijkheden van Internet Explorer” en dat ze de mogelijkheid wel “meegenomen hebben in hun onderzoek!” In plaats van dat ze gewoon een programma maken dat voldoet aan de normen van het World Wide Web Consortium, ondersteunen ze liever onveilige technologie. Jammer.
Installing Breezy – Don’t download from the Internet!
My dad’s disc crashed. I warned him about that possibility before, since he’s using Maxtor and we’ve very bad experiences with those discs. So since yesterday, I’ve been installing Ubuntu anew on his brand new (Maxtor 
) harddisc.
Since I recently recieved my shipment of Ubuntu CD’s (made available through ShipIt), I decided to start with those. They were no fun. During the install process, I told the system to download the latest packages from the Internet. In second stage installation (after the reboot), the stuff failed miserably. Apparantly, upstream has an update-incompatible version of libesd0, which crashes the installation and leaves you at a prompt. I tried to fix it, but I couldn’t, the package just wasn’t proper for the installation.
Desperate as I was to have the stuff working asap, I decided to download Dapper Drake, the alpha for the next version of Ubuntu, to be released in April. That looked really, really nice. Much of the stuff I wanted changed in Breezy was changed for the better. I actually really liked that desktop… apart from the fact that I couldn’t get my printer working.
Now, we’ve got a Canon S600 here, for which the driver from Ubuntu simply doesn’t work. I don’t know why they ship it with that driver, since the printer doesn’t print with it. Feels like someone didn’t do their job correctly. But, several years ago, we bought the driver from TurboPrint.de. This driver works perfectly… except on Dapper. I was able to print the testpage once and then it simply stopped printing or even responding to printing commands (you know, starting and warming up). Since I really need to print some stuff today, I decided to try Breezy again.
Which is what I’m doing now. The first time I again got caught by that strange upstream package which doesn’t want to install. Now I’m in second stage, by telling the system to not download packages from the Internet. I’ll do that after second stage, since there seems no adequate way to do second stage properly.
Btw, if you’re caught in second stage and want to start it again, start base-config new. It’ll start the second stage install anew, with a question about language up front. The thing is, if you by mistake entered “download packages from the internet” during your first stage, you’re screwed. Somehow you can’t just quit second stage, edit sources.list and start second stage anew. It will change the sources.list back to the one it generated during first stage. It must be saved somewhere on disc, but I’ve been unable to find it and honestly, I’m tired of searching for the stuff.
There must be some great documentation about how the installation works and how you can manipulate it. But I’ve been unable to find it. I hope this install just works.
Problemen met comments schrijven op mijn blog…
… zijn niet mijn probleem 
Gebruik een fatsoenlijke browser zoals Firefox of Opera. Mijn pagina voldoet (op twee kleine puntjes na, die niks met dat comment systeem te maken hebben) aan de norm van W3C, de authoriteit die bepaalt hoe de standaarden in elkaar zitten. Alleen met Internet Exploder krijg je die fout bij het schrijven van comments, dus ik vind het een fout in IE Niet in mijn weblog.
Dat was de dienstmededeling. Ga maar verder waar je mee bezig was.
Marketing
Het is een terugkerend thema in mijn dagelijkse werk: Hoe verkoop ik kwaliteit? Het probleem lijkt niet zo moeilijk, maar ongeveer 1 keer in de 2 weken gaat er twee dagen lang weinig door mijn hoofd dan die vraag.
Het punt is dat iedereen zegt dat ze de beste zijn en dat ze uitstekende service verlenen. Van onze klanten horen wij echter dat wij de enige partij zijn die dit ook daadwerkelijk voor hun doen. Of in ieder geval één van de weinige partijen. Maar dan nog, een nieuwe potentiële klant ziet bij iedere concurrent van ons hetzelfde staan: “Prima service”, “Uitstekende kwaliteit”, “Kennis van zaken”. En toch ben ik ervan overtuigd dat wij in ieder geval in Brabant en Limburg bij de besten horen. Sterker nog, ik ben serieus van mening dat wij op het gebied van Open Source Software toepassen binnen bedrijfsomgevingen de besten zijn. Maar hoe vermarkt je dat?
Het marketingbureau waar we mee gepraat hebben, had het over een product in de markt zetten. Aanvankelijk wilden we dat wel proberen, maar achteraf ben ik blij dat we dat niet gedaan hebben. Een product is inderdaad makkelijker te vermarkten, maar wij willen juist geen product verkopen, wij willen diensten verkopen. Onze sterke punten zijn onze kennis, onze inzet en onze service. Maar dat zijn niet zomaar sterke punten, daar blinken wij in uit. Regelmatig krijgen we mailtjes op de helpdesk in de trant van “Wat zijn jullie toch een prettige helpdesk” en “Deden jullie die andere dingen waar we dienstverleners voor gebruiken ook maar”.
En keer op keer denk ik dan weer na, hoe kunnen we onszelf afzetten tegen al die anderen. Een reputatie opbouwen is waarschijnlijk het enige. Maar dat duurt een tijd. Netwerken precies hetzelfde. Inmiddels ben ik bezig met een artikel over kwaliteit in Open Source (nou ja, indirect daarover), waarvan ik hoop dat ik het gepubliceerd krijg. Maar ik heb grote moeite met bedenken wat ik verder nog zou kunnen doen. Koude acquisitie is eigenlijk gewoon niet mijn ding. Op mensen afstappen en vertellen dat ze ons nodig hebben. Dat werkt niet voor mij. Dus komen we weer terug op zoveel mogelijk netwerken. Het gaat wel lukken, daar zijn we allebei wel van overtuigd, maar hoe snel zal het gaan?
Van een verslaving af
Na een half jaar spelen, heb ik besloten mijn WoW-verslaving op te geven. Verschillende dingen waren de aanleiding, maar het grootste probleem voor mij, uiteindelijk, was dat ik de tijd heel goed in andere, belangrijkere dingen kan steken (mijn vriendin, mijn bedrijf, etc.). Daarnaast merkte ik dat ik qua technische kennis hard achteruit ging en het echt hoog tijd is dat ik daar weer meer aandacht aan ga besteden. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld nog steeds niks gedaan met de smartcard die naast mijn powerbook ligt. Terwijl dat nog wel zo’n leuk speelgoed is!
Een andere reden is dat mensen zelfs online commissies gaan opzetten om vooral maar niks te hoeven doen. Zoals ik laatst ook al bij de AGV van Interlink zei, als niemand er moeite voor wilt doen, waren doen wij dan nog moeite voor hun? Zelfde met online-spelers. Grootste gedeelte van de mensen praat een heleboel, maar doet uiteindelijk niks. Sterker nog, wanneer dan iemand wel aktie onderneemt, wordt de persoon uitgescholden. Typische studentenmentaliteit, dus. Maar goed, daarom doe je natuurlijk ook aan zo’n spel, om wat te lamen. Word ik liever weer wat aktiever. Meer met Aag weg, met mijn kleine konijntjes spelen (als je de webcams een beetje in de gaten houdt, de kleine knijntjes zijn steeds vaker hun nest uit om te spelen!), samen met mijn vriendin leuke dingen doen. Allemaal veel belangrijker. Dus, tabee, Wow.
Overigens log ik wel nog regelmatig in, omdat ik bezig was met een interessante Addon. Maar ik verleng mijn account niet. Dus halverwege januari valt het doek definitief. Het is leuk geweest, nu weer verder met het echte leven.
