New layout (again)
So I finally got a new layout. And I’m happy with it. Makes the whole more readable. Very simple and quite light. Only need to change the photo on the frontpage, but no rush there. The current one actually fits me.

Theory of Everything
Just watched the TED presentation of Garrett Lisi about his Theory of Everything (in capitals, yes, because it really is very important). Although I must admit that, like Chris in the end, I didn’t really understood a lot of it, I did get a feeling of getting nearer to grasping the complexity and power behind his theory. I guess I need to brush up on my quantum mechanics a bit (or, more likely, my math) before I can actually understand him. But the sense of wonder keeps me bothered: I should’ve finished my physics degree.

Just read an email from Patrick McLean telling me he is considering my request for implementing OpenID on his website. Yay for my activism!

I really should spend some time on it this weekend. I noticed that even my CSS is broken!
Geluiden
Het licht flikkert nu we afremmen. Achter me zit een jonger meisje met een enigszins buitenlands accent. Voor me, ergens, zit iemand met een muziekspeler die harder staat dan zijn oren kunnen verdragen. Rechts voor me zit een meisje met bruine laarsjes op de bank tegenover haar. Haar vriend waarschuwde haar eerder toen de conducteur eraan kwam. Laarsjes snel van de bank af. Maar hij was amper voorbij en haar benen gingen weer omhoog.
Tegenover het gangpad zit een vrouw een vertaald boek te lezen, De Pantheon Getuige. Since The Da Vinci Code zie je mensen allerlei boeken lezen met mystiek klinkende titels in dezelfde stijl als The Da Vinci Code. Nikszeggend titels die een woordspeling willen delen met een succesvol boek. Ik vraag me wel af in hoeverre dat werkt.
Eigenlijk heb ik niks te vertellen. Ben gewoon gaan schrijven omdat ik niet meer wilde denken. Niet meer piekeren over wat geweest is en wat nog gaat gebeuren, maar gewoon opgaan in het heden. Na een heerlijke avond met een goede vriendin zou ik mijn avond verpesten als ik verval in mijn gepieker. Niet dat ik het echt kan tegenhouden.
Wat als, wat als. Wat als deze wagon eens ophoudt met zijn hoge gepiep. Nu ben ik toch een redelijk technisch persoon, maar ik kan maar niet verzinnen waar die piep voor nodig is. Hij klinkt ook alleen maar wanneer we rijden, niet als we stilstaan. Erg vervelend.
De muziek staat nog steeds hard, maar de meisjes achter me zijn ofwel uitgestapt, ofwel ineens stilgevallen. Zonder de piep van de wagon (we staan weer stil op een station) is het ook meteen een stuk rustiger. Rust. Dat kan ik goed gebruiken.
Ik moet denken aan de geluiden die ik zal missen. Het gemopper, het geroep, de douche die ’s ochtends in alle vroegte aan gaat. Het zal een nieuw tijdperk voor mezelf zijn. Van de ene kant hoop ik dat ze snel gaat, van de andere kant hoop ik dat ze nog veel redenen vindt om toch nog een weekje langer te blijven. Ondanks alles zal ik haar niet missen. Maar wel de geluiden om me heen. Geluiden die me afleiden en verleiden om te fantaseren over betere tijden.
Achter me hoor ik een meisje diep inademen. Het klinkt als een grote snik. Even overweeg ik of ik contact zal zoeken. Maar niet nu, niet nu ik zelf zo depressief ben. Daar doe ik niemand een plezier mee. Soms is verdriet ook wel goed. Opgaan in de geluiden om je heen en je eigen kleine concertje eraan toevoegen. Geluiden zijn fijn, ik wou dat ze me meer konden afleiden.
A week on the train
So I’ve been taking the train for a week now. Each morning from Sittard to Eindhoven, each afternoon back to Sittard. I kind of expected the most problems in the morning, but so far as I can see, that’s going quite alright. Not too crowded, it usually gets a bit crowded at Roermond, but then I’m already sitting, so I’m not bothered by it a lot.
Getting back is a bigger problem. Lots of delays, lots of people. I don’t mind a lot of people on the train (let’s face it, most commuters ignore the world around them), but I really hate it when I can’t find a decent place to sit. Bought an upgrade ticket twice this week, both times in the afternoon, to get back home. But even first class was very crowded.
Today it’s okay, but I left later than usual. Not sure how this will develop. I do hope this will get better in the next years, because I’ll be commuting this way for a loooong time.
From the train
So this is my first full week of train-travel from home to the office. Second day now (well, done this a few times last week too), heading home and already a very crowded train. Not a nice thing. At least I upgraded my ticket from second to first class, so I have a seat.
I hope I’m going to be able to keep this up for several years 
It’s nice being at the office.
Fixing X11 on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
I had some trouble getting X11.app to work. No idea why it stopped working all of a sudden, I don’t think I did anything strange that might break it. I got:

While researching this, I came across this page describing how to make Tiger’s X11 work on Leopard. It included the following step:
The final step is to edit the file /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and go to the bottom of the file and replace "exec quartz-wm" with "exec /usr/X11R6/bin/quartz-wm".
Well, my Tiger didn’t even have an /etc/X11/xinit directory. So I created it and added the xinitrc file with that one line. Now my X11.app works again. Yay!
Hope this helps someone else.
Update: Fixed the title. Tiger is of course 10.4, not 10.5.
