Even though I know I’m generalising, and that there are a lot of “normal” Americans (by my standards, that is), this article about how the American government is brainwashing it’s citizens to create a police state describes exactly how I feel.

XboX security
Since I’ve just finished reading Bruce Schneier‘s Secrets and Lies and are now in the process of reading his other book, Applied Cryptography, I loved this read:17 Mistakes Microsoft Made in the Xbox Security System.
One of the most important things this article confers is the fact that Schneier was, obviously, right in many of his assessments. Quite interesting.
Bazaar vs. Cathedral (or something like it)
I just started to read a blog post about Windows Vista development politics and once again I’m glad I’m in the *nix-camp. Microsoft is trying to create a big leviathan, software-wise, which controls every and all aspects of your computer. A good *nix environment (like Linux or a *BSD or even MacOSX) works the other way around: Create lots of little controls that control one teeny-weeny aspect of your computer. But be sure they control it very, very well.
The same should be applied to many business-aspects. Don’t create a major management that tries to control everything. Have each employee be responsible for their own work and make sure they’re the right people at the right place (like, don’t have a marketeer decide how your program should look, have an interface designer do that!). I know that idea is an utopia, you never have all the people around that actually have all the specialist knowledge that you need. But you can make intelligent decisions here.
I mean, when I look at my own company, I’m the one who takes financial decisions. Of course I consult my business partner when I’m about to refurnish our office, but he knows I’ll make the right decisions. Just like he makes any technical decisions. Of course he talks them over with me, but I trust him about those things, so the actual decision is taken by him. I really, really hope we can grow this way, too. The right people at the right place.
Open Source bij gemeentes
Ben momenteel aan het luisteren naar een interessante discussie over Open Source software en Open Standaarden bij de overheid (nou ja, discussie, meer een eenzijdig verhaal). Toch wel erg interessant om te horen. Toch goed om te merken dat de overheid er dus toch wel mee bezig is en met name kleinere gemeentes. Jammer dat de gemeentes waar ik contact mee heb gehad niet hiermee bezig (willen?) zijn.

Another reason for using Open Source when security counts
Yet another quote from Bruce Schneier‘s Secrets and Lies (page 332):
[...] for example, the security of PGP might assume that no one could succesfully bribe the programmers.
And that’s exactly the reason why you want Open Source software when security counts. Of course someone can bribe an Open Source developer too, but the chance of it being noticed by all the people that backport/apply patches is much higher. And if you ever have doubts, you simply check the code yourself.

Poisoned punji sticks
Another quote from Bruce Schneier‘s Secrets and Lies (page 284):
When everything works together, no single solution has to bear the total responsibility of deterring an attacker. And the required strength of each individual countermeasure depends on the others. A $5 door lock may be sufficient given the fence and guards. A $50 door lock may be wasteful given the open window nearby. Poisoned punji sticks might be superfluous given the whirling steel blades.
(Yes, I’m reading this book slow, but that’s because I only read it during my anti rsi break, which is 7 minutes every 45 minutes.)
Sollicitatie
As we speak (nou ja, ‘as I write’, eigenlijk) loopt Monique het gebouw binnen waar ze hopelijk binnen niet al te lange tijd kan gaan werken. Voor een sollicitatiegesprek. Ze belde me zojuist, aangezien ze al rond half 5 op de parkeerplaats arriveerde, terwijl ze pas om 5 uur het sollicitatiegesprek heeft. En toen ging ze zich dus vervelen. Maar gelukkig is haar vriendje dan maar 10 cijfertjes op haar mobiel van haar verwijderd.
Toch wel spannend. Ik hoop dat ze de baan krijgt, zou voor ons heel erg mooi zijn. Voornamelijk voor haar. Want bij haar huidige baan heeft ze het zo ongeveer wel gezien en ik vind het steeds minder goed voor haar. Het is niet alleen iedere dag 300km rijden (een afstand waarop vanalles kan gebeuren), maar het is bovendien in het buitenland. En ik merk dat ze langzaam wel uitgekeken is op de praktijk daar. Het werk was leuk, maar het ging gewoon al een tijd niet meer goed. Tijd voor wat nieuws. En dit wordt het. Van alle sollicitanten is ze de enige die doorgegaan is voor dit gesprek. Ik ben erg hoopvol, dus!

Social Engineering is the best hack
While reading Bruce Schneier‘s Secrets and Lies, I came across this great quote from Kevin Mitnick. I’m quoting the whole paragraph as it’s written on page 267:
When Kevin Mitnick testified before Congress in 2000 he talked about social engineering: “I was so successful in that line of attack that I rarely had to resort to a technical attack,” he said. “Companies can spend millions of dollars toward technological protections and that’s wasted if somebody can basically call someone on the telephone and either convince them to do something on the computer that lowers the computer’s defenses or reveals the information they were seeking.”
When you think about it, it so obvious. We spend so much time securing servers (at least, in my company), that most people forget that the weakest link in any system is always the Users. Take it to heart.

X-Men: The Last Stand
Zojuist terug van X-Men: The Last Stand. Helemaal niet verkeerd. Als je van het genre houdt, absoluut een aanrader. Met name Wolverine blijft lekker in-character. En Beast (Hank McCoy) maakt een appearance. Dat was altijd mijn favoriet uit de tekenfilm-serie. Als je me kent, weet je denk ik wel waarom 
Verder natuurlijk cool dat zowel Famke als Rebecca (geen born-and-bred Nederlander, maar toch) in één film spelen.
Goed
Soms gaan dingen zo goed en meteen ook niet. Dan heb je het gevoel dat alles de juiste kant op gaat, maar die dingen die echt belangrijk zijn, blijven steken. Achterblijfsels die het nieuwe tempo niet kunnen volgen. En hoe hard je ook sjort en trekt, ze blijven maar achterliggen. Daar verandert niks. Dat blijft allemaal hetzelfde. Hoe graag je ook wilt dat het meeverandert.
En dan moet je een keuze maken. Loslaten of zelf een stapje terug doen. Loslaten is haast onmogelijk, aangezien het een onderdeel van jezelf is. Eén van de belangrijkste dingen in je leven, één van de redenen waarom je het allemaal doet. Loslaten is onmogelijk, dat vermindert de waarde van de rest teveel.
Een stapje terug doen, dan? Het tempo dat je maakt is belangrijk, zodat je de rest van de wereld kunt bijbenen. Deadlines moeten gehaald worden, gesprekken gevoerd, ideeën geopperd. Meegroeien, anders verlies je je voorsprong. Of nee, niet zozeer je voorsprong, je paralelle positie. Je hebt geen voorsprong nodig, als je de wereld om je heen kunt bijbenen. Beter bijbenen en wat extra energie in je benen overhouden dan uit alle macht een voorsprong halen, waarbij je steeds energie kwijtraakt die je beter kan gebruiken. Een stapje terug is geen optie, een stapje terug is achterlopen en onherroepelijke stilstand.
Dus blijven we doorwaggelen. Met de rechterhand op het tempo dat gewenst is en met de linkerhand dat gedeelte dat achterblijft vooruit trekken. En hopen dat ook daar het tempo uiteindelijk wordt overgenomen, de noodzakelijke veranderingen worden doorgevoerd. Maar dit kan niet te lang duren, anders scheur ik doormidden. Hoe lang nog? Ik heb geen idee. Maar ik voel de spanning bouwen. De bom staat op barsten. Er moet snel iets gebeuren.
Was ik maar van rubber.
